Installation Requirements

General Installation

All steel window systems must be installed by competent personnel per manufacturer specifications. Installation quality directly affects window performance, weatherproofing, and (for X-ray windows) radiation shielding integrity.

Standard Window Installation

  • Frame must be plumb, level, and securely fixed to wall structure.
  • Flashing and weatherproofing per E2/AS1 for external windows.
  • Sealant joints per manufacturer specifications.
  • Glazing installed per NZS 4223 Parts 1 to 4.
  • Operable windows must open, close, and lock smoothly after installation.
  • External windows must be specified for the correct wind zone and building exposure.

X-Ray Window Installation

  • Lead glass must overlap lead lining in the wall per medical physics expert specifications.
  • Frame lead lining must be continuous with wall lead shielding: no gaps or shine paths.
  • All joints between frame and wall shielding must maintain shielding continuity.
  • Structural support must be verified as adequate for the weight of lead glass and lined frame.
  • Under ORS C1 2024 clause 5(b), the holder of the source licence must ensure that structural shielding, including windows, is approved as adequate by a medical physics expert or another qualified expert; under clause 5(c) its adequacy must be verified and documented, in consultation with that expert, whenever circumstances change that could increase the risks. Any commissioning survey or leakage test is part of the project physicist's scope.

Quality Assurance

  • Verify window alignment: frame must be plumb and level
  • Check all sealant joints are continuous and properly tooled
  • For external windows: verify flashing, drainage, and weatherproofing per E2/AS1
  • For operable windows: test opening, closing, and locking mechanisms
  • For X-ray windows: verify lead glass overlaps wall lead lining with no gaps
  • For X-ray windows: shielding approved as adequate by the medical physics expert or other qualified expert (ORS C1 2024 clause 5(b)); any commissioning survey per the project physicist's scope
  • Document installation with photos for building consent records

Maintenance Requirements

In accordance with NZ Building Code (Clause B2 Durability) and manufacturer specifications.

Maintenance Schedule

Inspection Item Frequency Requirement
Visual inspection: frame, glass, seals 12-Monthly Check for damage, corrosion, seal deterioration, glass defects
Clean frames 12-Monthly Clean with mild detergent and soft cloth. Do not use abrasive cleaners
Weatherseals and gaskets 12-Monthly Inspect for deterioration, cracking, or loss of compression. Replace if needed
Operable window mechanisms 12-Monthly Check operation, lubricate hinges and mechanisms as needed
Sealant joints (external) 12-Monthly Check for cracking, adhesion failure, or deterioration. Re-seal if needed
Powder coat finish 12-Monthly Inspect for chips, scratches, or corrosion. Touch up as needed
X-Ray windows: radiation survey 12-Monthly Annual radiation survey recommended by qualified expert
X-Ray windows: lead glass integrity 12-Monthly Check for chips, cracks, or delamination in lead glass

Maintenance Records

All inspections and maintenance must be recorded. Records should include:

  • Date of inspection
  • Inspector name
  • Findings for each inspection point
  • Details of any defects identified
  • Corrective actions taken
  • Date of next scheduled inspection

Common Issues to Watch For

  • Deteriorated weatherseals allowing water ingress (external windows)
  • Corrosion at frame joints or fixing points
  • Failed sealant joints around frame perimeter
  • Stiff or binding operable window mechanisms
  • Damaged or cracked glass
  • X-ray windows: any impact damage to lead glass must be assessed by a qualified expert before the room continues operation

Warnings & Limitations

Critical Information: Read and understand all warnings before specifying, installing, or maintaining this product.

Installation Warnings

  • Competent Installation Required: Steel window systems must be installed by competent personnel per manufacturer specifications.
  • External Weatherproofing: External windows must be flashed and sealed per E2/AS1. Incorrect weatherproofing will result in water ingress and building damage.
  • Wind Zone Specification: External windows must be specified for the correct wind zone and building exposure per NZS 4211:2008 (Amendment 1) or SNZ TS 4211:2022.
  • Do Not Modify: Do not cut, drill, or modify the window frame or glazing without consulting the manufacturer. Any modification may void the warranty and compromise performance.
  • X-Ray Windows: Shielding Continuity: Lead glass must overlap wall lead lining per medical physics expert specifications. Any gap is a potential radiation leakage path.

Use Limitations

  • Not Fire Rated: These window systems are not fire rated. Do not use where fire resistance is required for windows.
  • Standard Windows: No Radiation Shielding: Standard steel windows (RCD-SW-STD) do not provide radiation shielding. Use X-ray rated windows (RCD-SW-XR) where radiation shielding is required.
  • X-Ray Windows: Physicist Specification Required: X-ray rated windows must be specified by a medical physics expert or other qualified expert (ORS C1 2024) for lead equivalence. The manufacturer does not determine the required shielding.
  • X-Ray Windows: Fixed Only: X-ray rated windows are fixed (non-operable) to maintain shielding continuity.
  • X-Ray Windows: Not for Gamma/Therapeutic Radiation: X-ray rated windows are designed for diagnostic energies (typically up to 150 kV). Not suitable for gamma radiation or high-energy therapeutic radiation.
  • Structural Support: The surrounding structure must be adequate for the weight of the window system, particularly X-ray rated windows with lead glass.
  • Thermal Performance: Glazing and frame must be specified to meet NZBC H1 energy efficiency requirements for the specific application.

Maintenance Warnings

  • Regular Inspection Required: Weatherseals, gaskets, and sealant joints deteriorate over time and must be inspected annually.
  • X-Ray Windows: Report Damage Immediately: Any impact damage to lead glass must be assessed by a qualified expert before the room continues operation.
  • Do Not Use Abrasive Cleaners: Abrasive cleaners will damage the powder coat finish and may cause corrosion.

Product Bans & Use Restrictions

  • No Current Product Bans: This product line is not subject to any current product bans or recalls in New Zealand.
  • Hazardous Material (X-Ray Windows): Lead glass contains lead. It is encapsulated within the glazing unit. Handling and disposal must comply with applicable health, safety, and environmental regulations.

Section 26 Statement

As at 2026-09-11, the RCD Steel Window Systems product line is not subject to any warning or ban under Section 26 of the Building Act 2004.

Any future warnings or bans affecting this product will be immediately reflected on this disclosure page and noted on the BPIR Hub.

Regulatory Compliance

  • Building Consent: Installation typically requires building consent. Check with your local Building Consent Authority.
  • External Moisture (E2): External windows must comply with E2/AS1 weatherproofing requirements.
  • Radiation Safety Act 2016: X-ray rated windows must comply with the applicable Ministry of Health ORS Code of Practice. Structural shielding must be approved as adequate by a medical physics expert or another qualified expert (ORS C1 2024 clause 5(b)).

Liability Disclaimer

Restruct Commercial Doors is not liable for performance failures resulting from incorrect installation, unauthorised modifications, inadequate maintenance, incorrect specification, or use outside specified parameters. X-ray lead equivalence is specified by the project's medical physics expert or other qualified expert (ORS C1 2024), not by the manufacturer.
