Hardware Components

Note: All hardware must be anti-ligature rated. Standard commercial hardware must NEVER be substituted — substitution introduces ligature points.
  • Continuous Geared Hinges: Full-height hinges running the entire door edge. Eliminates the gap between leaf and frame that standard butt hinges create. This gap is a primary ligature risk. Anti-ligature butt hinges are also an option depending on the risk level.
  • Concealed Door Closer: Fully concealed within door leaf or frame header. No protruding arms, tracks, or bodies when door is closed. Adjustable for accessibility (NZS 4121:2001).
  • Anti-Ligature Lever Handles: Sloped or curved profiles that prevent cords from being looped or tied. Flush with door face. No protruding thumbturns, escutcheons, or lock bodies.
  • Anti-Barricade Override (where specified): Staff-operated mechanism allowing override of a barricaded door from the corridor side. Installation of removable door stops is also an option.
  • Breakaway/Load-Release Mechanism (ensuite doors): Magnetic or mechanical release at clinically defined force thresholds. Typical settings: less than 10 kg for standard risk, less than 5 kg for high risk. Setting confirmed by facility clinical team.
  • Vision Panel Glazing: Attack-resistant glazing per EN 356. Safety glazing per NZS 4223.3:2016. Glazing retention is flush and tamper-proof.
  • Intumescent & Smoke Seals: Required for fire-rated configurations, or smoke seals for smoke control doors.
  • Privacy Indicator (ensuite doors): Anti-ligature design compliant indicator.
Critical Warning: Anti-ligature doors are safety-critical products. All hardware must be manufacturer-approved anti-ligature components installed with tamper-proof security fixings. Standard commercial hardware must never be substituted — doing so introduces ligature points and voids the anti-ligature performance.

Installation Requirements

Experienced Installation Required

Anti-ligature doors must be installed by a competent installer experienced with anti-ligature door systems, in accordance with manufacturer specifications. Incorrect installation compromises anti-ligature safety performance. We can provide installation with our experienced installation team.

Installation Standards

  • Steel frames fixed to structural backing at specified centres using security (tamper-proof) fasteners.
  • Frame must be plumb, level, and square within manufacturer's tolerances.
  • Full-height continuous geared hinges installed per manufacturer's template.
  • Concealed closers adjusted to meet opening force requirements for accessibility (NZS 4121:2001) while maintaining reliable self-closing.
  • All hardware installed per manufacturer's specifications using tamper-proof security fixings. Standard fixings must not be substituted.
  • Vision panel glazing installed per manufacturer's glazing method. Glazing retention flush and tamper-proof.
  • Breakaway mechanism (ensuite doors): load-release set to threshold specified by facility clinical team. Test and verify release at specified force. Document the release force setting.
  • Frame and fixing system must be compatible with wall construction. Follow manufacturer's fixing details for specific wall type.

Quality Assurance

  • Opening/closing force test
  • Latch operation check
  • Anti-ligature hardware integrity check — verify no ligature points on any component
  • Clearance verification
  • Breakaway function test (ensuite doors) — document release force
  • For fire-rated configurations: comply with NZS 4520:2010. Complete fire door installation declaration.
  • Complete manufacturer's commissioning checklist
  • Document installation with photos

Maintenance Requirements

In accordance with NZ Building Code and manufacturer specifications. Anti-ligature doors require MORE FREQUENT inspection than standard commercial doors due to the safety-critical nature of the hardware.

Maintenance Schedule

Inspection Item Frequency Requirement
Visual check — damage, tampering, loosened fixings Weekly (or per facility policy) Any loose fastener or cracked panel is a potential safety risk. Address immediately
Breakaway/load-release function (ensuite doors) Monthly (or per facility policy) Test release at specified force. Reset and verify re-engagement
Continuous hinges, concealed closer, lockset, handles, seals, fixings 6-Monthly Professional inspection. Lubricate per manufacturer's instructions. Verify all security fixings tight
Intumescent and smoke seals (fire-rated) 6-Monthly Per NZS 4520:2010 sections 7.1-7.6. Check for damage, displacement, deterioration
Complete inspection — all components 12-Monthly Adjustment, lubrication, replacement of worn parts. Vision panel integrity check

Maintenance Records

All inspections must be recorded and retained. For fire-rated doors, retain records for minimum 3 years per NZS 4520:2010.

Defects Must Be Addressed Immediately

Any component showing signs of damage, wear, or tampering must be repaired or replaced immediately with manufacturer-approved anti-ligature components. Do not delay — these are safety-critical items.

Common Issues to Watch For

  • Loosened or missing tamper-proof fixings (immediate safety risk)
  • Damage to anti-ligature lever handles exposing potential ligature points
  • Continuous hinge wear or misalignment
  • Concealed closer not maintaining reliable self-closing
  • Breakaway mechanism not releasing at specified force (ensuite doors)
  • Vision panel glazing damage or loosened retention
  • Intumescent seals damaged or displaced (fire-rated doors)
  • Standard commercial hardware substituted for anti-ligature hardware (must be reversed immediately)

Warnings & Limitations

Critical Safety Information — Read and understand all warnings before specifying, installing, or maintaining this product.

Installation Warnings

  • Experienced Installation Required: Anti-ligature doors must only be installed by competent personnel experienced with anti-ligature door systems.
  • Anti-Ligature Integrity: All hardware must be anti-ligature rated and installed with tamper-proof fixings. Standard commercial hardware introduces ligature points.
  • Do Not Modify: Any modification to the door, frame, or hardware may introduce ligature points and void anti-ligature performance and warranty.
  • Breakaway Settings: Ensuite door load-release thresholds must be confirmed by the facility's clinical team. Manufacturer standard settings may not suit all environments.

Use Limitations

  • Not a Substitute for Clinical Observation: Anti-ligature doors reduce the risk of self-harm but do not eliminate it. Doors are one component of a comprehensive ligature risk mitigation strategy including clinical protocols, staffing, and observation.
  • Internal Use Only: Unless specifically designed for external exposure.
  • Fire Rating Limitations: Anti-ligature features may limit available FRR options. Not all configurations available in all fire ratings.
  • Acoustic Limitations: Anti-ligature hardware and continuous hinges may affect achievable acoustic performance.
  • Maximum Door Size: Limited by continuous hinge capacity and closer capability.
  • Not Security-Rated: Unless specifically tested for physical attack resistance. Anti-ligature doors mitigate self-harm risk — they are not security doors unless separately rated.
  • Not for Seclusion Rooms: Without specific seclusion-rated configuration. Seclusion rooms have additional requirements beyond standard anti-ligature.

Maintenance Warnings

  • More Frequent Inspection Required: Anti-ligature doors require weekly visual checks and monthly breakaway testing (ensuite doors).
