Hardware Components

Note: If client installs the hardware, select from compatible hardware that does not compromise acoustic performance.
  • Hinges: 304 Stainless Steel Ball Bearing Hinges, minimum 3 per door. Must support door weight and allow correct leaf-to-frame alignment for seal compression.
  • Door Closer: Automatic door closer with adjustable closing speed and latch action. Must provide sufficient force to fully compress all perimeter acoustic seals on closure.
  • Latch & Lock: Tubular latch or mortice lock with furniture. Latch must hold the door firmly closed against seal compression.
  • Handles/Lever Sets: Lever handles on both sides (exit hardware where required).
  • Acoustic Seals — Perimeter: Continuous compression-type seals to head and both jambs. Must make uninterrupted contact when door is closed. Compatible profiles: Raven, Lorient, Kilargo (consult manufacturer for approved profiles).
  • Acoustic Seals — Bottom: Automatic retractable drop seal. Must contact threshold fully across its width when door is closed. Compatible products per manufacturer specification.
  • Vision Panel: Acoustic hush laminated glass with fire-rated beading where applicable. Vision panel size directly affects STC/Rw — specify minimum required size.
  • Threshold: Threshold plate for drop seal contact (where required). Must be flat and continuous across the full opening width.
Critical Warning: All seal components must be manufacturer-approved profiles. Substituting seals or hardware without verification will compromise acoustic performance. A 3mm gap around the perimeter can reduce a tested STC 52 assembly to STC 21.

Installation Requirements

Experienced Installation Required

Acoustic doors must be installed by a competent installer in accordance with manufacturer specifications to maintain acoustic performance. We can provide installation with our experienced installation team.

Installation Standards

  • Installation must comply with manufacturer's installation instructions and drawings.
  • Door frames must be properly fixed to walls with acoustic performance equal to or greater than the door assembly.
  • Clearances between door leaf and frame must be within manufacturer's specified tolerances (typically 2-3mm at head and jambs).
  • ALL gaps between frame and structural opening must be filled continuously with acoustic sealant or packing — no voids. This is the single most critical step for acoustic performance.
  • Do not use expanding foam unless specifically approved by the manufacturer for acoustic applications.
  • All perimeter seals must make continuous, uninterrupted contact when door is closed. If light is visible around the closed door, sound will leak.
  • Automatic drop seal must contact threshold fully across its width.
  • Door closer must be adjusted to fully compress all seals on every closing cycle.
  • Door must close fully and latch from any open position.

Installation Guides Available

Contact Restruct Commercial Doors for product-specific installation guides and framing details.

Wall Preparation

The wall opening must have acoustic performance equal to or greater than the door assembly before installation. The acoustic performance of the door assembly cannot exceed the performance of the surrounding wall. Coordinate with the wall system designer.

Frame-to-wall junction must be continuously sealed with acoustic sealant — any air gap creates a flanking path that bypasses the door's rated performance.

Quality Assurance

  • Verify door closes and latches correctly from any open position
  • Check all seals compress evenly — no visible light gaps around closed door
  • Confirm drop seal contacts threshold fully
  • Test door closer provides sufficient force to compress all seals
  • For fire-rated acoustic doors: verify fire door tag is fixed to door leaf and frame
  • Document installation with photos for building consent records
  • For combined fire/acoustic doors: complete fire door installation declaration per NZS 4520:2010

Maintenance Requirements

In accordance with NZ Building Code (Clause B2 Durability) and manufacturer specifications. Acoustic doors must be inspected and maintained to ensure continued acoustic performance.

Maintenance Schedule

Inspection Item Frequency Requirement
Visual inspection — door closes and latches Monthly Door must close and latch from any open position with all seals compressed
Check for visible gaps around closed door Monthly No light visible around the closed door perimeter
Perimeter seals condition 6-Monthly Seals intact, continuous, no compression set, tearing, or detachment
Automatic drop seal operation 6-Monthly Drop seal deploys fully and contacts threshold across full width
Door closer operation 6-Monthly Closing force sufficient to compress all seals. Adjust speed and latch action as needed
Hardware security 6-Monthly All hardware securely fixed, hinges tight
Frame-to-wall sealant joints 12-Monthly No gaps between frame and wall. Re-seal if needed
Door/frame clearances 12-Monthly Gaps within manufacturer's tolerances
Comprehensive inspection 12-Monthly Full documentation of condition and any remedial works
Fire door inspection (if fire-rated) 6-Monthly Per NZS 4520:2010 requirements

Maintenance Records

All inspections and maintenance activities must be recorded. Records should include:

  • Date of inspection
  • Inspector name
  • Findings for each inspection point
  • Details of any defects identified
  • Corrective actions taken
  • Date of next scheduled inspection

Defects Must Be Rectified Promptly

Any defects that compromise acoustic performance must be repaired. Do not continue relying on rated acoustic performance from a door that fails any inspection point.

Common Issues to Watch For

  • Door held open by wedges or objects (acoustic attenuation is zero when door is open)
  • Damaged, worn, or compressed perimeter seals (replace with manufacturer-approved profiles)
  • Drop seal not deploying or not contacting threshold (adjust or replace)
  • Door closer not providing enough force to compress seals (adjust or replace)
  • Gaps between frame and wall (re-seal with acoustic sealant)
  • Paint applied over acoustic seals (remove — paint prevents seal compression)
  • Door leaf modified (cutting, planing, drilling voids acoustic and fire ratings)
  • Excessive gaps between door and frame (adjust hinges or hardware)

Typical Seal Life

Perimeter and drop seals: 5-10 years depending on traffic frequency and environmental conditions. Higher-traffic doors require more frequent seal replacement.

Warnings & Limitations

Critical Information — Read and understand all warnings before specifying, installing, or maintaining this product.

Installation Warnings

  • Experienced Installation Required: Acoustic doors must be installed by competent personnel with knowledge of acoustic door assembly requirements.
  • Wall Acoustic Rating: The surrounding wall must have an acoustic performance equal to or greater than the door assembly. A high-rated door in a low-rated wall will not deliver the door's tested performance.
  • Do Not Modify: Any modification to the door leaf, frame, seals, or hardware may void the acoustic rating and warranty. Do not cut, plane, drill, or alter any component without consulting the manufacturer.
  • Seal Substitution: Only use manufacturer-approved seal profiles. Substituting seals will compromise acoustic performance.
  • Frame Sealing: ALL gaps between frame and wall must be continuously sealed with acoustic sealant. This is the most common cause of poor field acoustic performance.

Use Limitations

  • Laboratory vs Field Performance: Stated STC/Rw is based on laboratory testing per ISO 10140 / ASTM E90. Field performance is typically 5-10 dB lower due to flanking paths, installation quality, and surrounding construction.
  • Complete Assembly Rating: The acoustic rating applies to the complete door assembly as tested (leaf, frame, seals, threshold, hardware). Changing any component may alter the rated performance.
  • Internal Use Only: Standard acoustic doors are designed for internal use. Not suitable for external applications unless specifically designed and sealed for weather exposure.
  • Door Must Be Closed: Acoustic performance is achieved only when the door is fully closed and latched with all seals compressed. Doors held open provide zero acoustic attenuation.
  • Vision Panels: Vision panels reduce acoustic performance proportionally to their size. The rated STC/Rw applies only to the specific glazing configuration as tested.
  • G6 Compliance: The STC/Rw rating alone does not constitute compliance with NZ Building Code Clause G6. Overall wall system performance is assessed holistically. G6 mandatory requirements apply only to inter-tenancy elements in household units.

Maintenance Warnings

  • Regular Inspection Required: Acoustic seals wear and lose effectiveness over time. Inspect at least 6-monthly.
  • Seal Replacement: Replace seals showing wear, compression set, or loss of contact. Use only manufacturer-approved profiles.
  • Do Not Paint Seals: Paint prevents acoustic seals from compressing correctly.

Product Bans & Use Restrictions

  • No Current Product Bans: This product line is not subject to any current product bans or recalls in New Zealand.
  • Prohibited Use — External Applications: Unless specifically manufactured for external use, acoustic doors are not approved for exterior installation.

Section 26 Statement

As at 2026-03-08, the RCD Acoustic Door Systems product line is not subject to any warning or ban under Section 26 of the Building Act 2004.

Any future warnings or bans affecting this product will be immediately reflected on this disclosure page and noted on the BPIR Hub.

Regulatory Compliance

  • Building Consent: Installation may require building consent depending on the scope of work. Check with your local Building Consent Authority.
